Date: Aug. 21, 2026 Participant: Marcos Berreles #14 Race: 2026 Habanero Habanero 135 Distance: 0.0 miles

Grinding Through 132 Miles of Texas Heat to Crack the Top 16 Marcos Berreles covered 132.6 miles in 45:01:59 at the inaugural running of the Habanero 135 a distance TROT added for 2026 specifically because 100 miles wasn't enough for the race's veteran finishers. Out of 39 entrants in the event, Berreles finished 16th overall, 15th among men, and 5th in the M30-39 division. Early splits showed strong control, with loop paces in the 10:0013:00 min/mile range through the first 40 miles and overall placement consistently inside the top 16. Two surges stood out: near mile 63, Berreles moved into 2nd place overall (2nd among men), and again near mile 121 he climbed to 3rd overall both notable jumps relative to a jockeying field, before longer stops pulled him back into the mid-pack. As the race stretched past 30 hours, loop times lengthened considerably, with several exceeding 40 minutes and one late loop taking over an hour, pushing the overall pace from the low-13:00s at halfway to 20:22 min/mile by the finish. This pattern is typical over a 45-hour effort in extreme heat, but tightening the length of rest stops in the final third rather than raw loop speed looks like the clearest lever for a faster finish next time on this course.
