Steady Start Builds Toward a Grinding Late-Race Surge At the 2026 Habanero Hundred a race so notorious for its extreme conditions that only 198 finishers have completed the 100-mile distance since 2015 Edith Carreto covered 97.79 miles in 28:57:00, good for 15th overall out of 79 starters, 5th among women, and 2nd in the F20-29 division. Her opening six miles were remarkably uniform, each clocking in at 13:33-13:34 min/mile, a pace that had her sitting inside the top five women early on. From mile 7 onward, splits began to lengthen as the heat and terrain took their toll, a common pattern in a race built around deep sand and triple-digit real-feel temperatures. By the 40-60 mile stretch, per-mile splits settled into the 15-20 min/mile range, with elapsed pace drifting from 14:00 to nearly 16:00 min/mile a gradual but steady decline rather than a sudden collapse, reflecting solid pacing discipline through the midrace. The most striking stretch came late: at mile 74 she briefly claimed the overall and female lead, then again from miles 87 through 89 she held 1st overall and 1st female for three consecutive laps (splits of 22:37, 22:26, 22:26), and resurfaced at the front again at mile 93. This late-race positioning swing suggests strong mental resilience and tactical patience as competitors around her faded.
