Fast Start Gives Way to a Gritty, Heat-Tempered Grind to the Finish Matt Recsnik opened his 2026 Habanero Hundred with real pop, banking his first six miles at an even 14:16/mile pace good enough to sit inside the top 20 overall early on. That opening stretch stood in sharp contrast to what followed: as the Texas heat and deep sand of the 7IL Ranch loop course took hold, his per-mile pace steadily climbed into the mid-to-high teens, eventually settling into the 17:3018:00/mile range for the back two-thirds of the race. It's a textbook ultra-distance fade, but one made more pronounced by a course whose organizers openly warn of triple-digit real-feel temperatures. The lap-by-lap data shows a runner who kept moving through repeated rough patches rather than one long collapse. Splits ballooned above 30 minutes on at least five separate loops (including a 39:45 near mile 44 and a 36:29 near mile 32), but each was answered by a rebound into the 1116 minute range on the following loop a pattern that speaks to disciplined recovery rather than terminal decline. Notably, his overall placement spiked as high as 2nd during a few mid-to-late loops (miles 68, 8183, and 87), suggesting a field that was fading around him even as his own pace slowed. Tightening the variance between strong and weak loops particularly avoiding the 25-30+ minute splits would be the clearest path to a faster finish next time. Recsnik crossed the line in 29:28:47, comfortably inside the 30-hour cutoff, finishing 17th overall and 12th among men in a field of 79. That result carries extra weight given the race's history: between 2015 and 2025, only 198 total 100-mile finishes have been recorded at the Habanero Hundred, a race deliberately designed to punish with a high-noon start in peak Texas heat.
