Fast Start Gives Way to a Gritty Late Surge for the Podium Pierce Showe placed 3rd overall (2nd in gender, 2nd in the men's open division) among 79 participants in the 100-mile event at the 2026 Habanero Hundred, finishing in 21:28:05 over 97.79 recorded miles at a 13:10/mile average. The result places him among a small club TROT's Habanero Hundred has produced only 198 total 100-mile finishes across its first decade, run on a single 10km loop under Texas' brutal August sun. Showe's early race was notably quick, opening with five consecutive 9:22 miles before the heat and terrain pushed his splits into the 10:0012:00 range by mile 10. He held the top spot in the M20-29 division from roughly mile 15 through mile 53, then moved into overall podium contention through the middle miles. Late in the race, his effort became a real battle for position he briefly claimed the overall lead near mile 91 (19:41:52 elapsed) and again near mile 97, trading places with competitors in the closing stretch as splits stretched into the 14:0017:00/mile range over the final 20 miles. The steep pace drop-off from sub-10:00 miles early to sustained 15:00+ splits late suggests the opening effort may have been more aggressive than the day's heat allowed for long-term sustainability. A slightly more conservative first quarter could help preserve energy reserves for the demanding closing miles. That said, reclaiming the overall lead twice in the final 10 miles reflects strong closing resolve and mental toughness exactly the kind of grit this course, run in some of the harshest conditions in Texas ultrarunning, tends to reward.
