Even Early Pace Fuels a Late Charge to a Masters Podium Joe Gonzales, 42, of Uvalde, Texas, tackled the 2026 Habanero Hundred's 100-mile distancea race whose brutal high-noon start and 100-plus-degree "real feel" conditions have produced just 198 finishes over its first decade. Gonzales covered 97.79 miles in 28:33:06, finishing 12th overall out of 79 starters, 9th among men, and 2nd in the Masters division. Gonzales opened with remarkable consistency, holding a 13:32 min/mile pace through the first six loops and sitting inside the top 15 overall from mile one. That efficiency carried him to 2nd in his Masters division by mile 15.
