Wire-to-Wire Victory in Texas' Toughest Heat Jared Rothlauf, 40, of San Antonio, won the 100-mile race outright at the 2026 Habanero Hundred, crossing the line in 19:47:56 over 97.79 miles for a 12:08 min/mile average pace, topping a field of 79 finishers. Rothlauf held the overall, gender, and division lead from the very first mile of the race all the way to the finish a true wire-to-wire performance over nearly a full day of racing. His early splits were aggressive for the distance: the opening five miles clicked off at a rock-steady 8:278:28 min/mile before easing into the 9:0010:00 min/mile range through the first marathon of loops. As the day wore on and the Texas heat and deep sand took their toll, his pace lengthened gradually and predictably, moving into the 1113 min/mile range around mile 60 and settling into 1417 min/mile splits over the closing miles a well-managed, gradual fade rather than a dramatic collapse, which is a strong sign of pacing control over 97-plus miles. The Habanero Hundred is one of the rarest finishes in Texas ultrarunning: between 2015 and 2025, only 198 total finishers have completed the 100-mile distance, and every finisher's name is stitched into race history by being printed on the following year's shirt as part of the "Wall of Flame." Given the fast opening miles, Rothlauf could look at a slightly more conservative first 10K in future 100-mile efforts to further flatten the back-half fade but sustaining the overall race lead from gun to finish in these conditions reflects excellent pacing discipline and mental resilience.
