Age-Group Champion Grinds Through the Heat to a Division Title Tristan Martinez claimed first place in the M20-29 division at the 2026 Habanero Hundred, covering 61.19 miles in 19:26:12 to finish 24th overall and 16th among men in a field of 75 competitors in the 100K. The result is especially notable given the race's brutal format a high-noon start with real-feel temperatures often exceeding 100 degrees, deliberately designed so runners absorb the heat while fresh rather than in the race's final hours. Martinez's early splits showed strong, consistent pacing, holding roughly 14:00-14:02 per mile through the first six miles and sitting inside the top 20 in his division. As the race progressed into the double-digit hours, his per-mile pace gradually extended into the 15-20 minute range, with several late-race miles slowing further including a 25:21 split at mile 32, 27:47 at mile 38, and 28:32 at mile 44 reflecting the cumulative toll of distance and conditions. Despite this decay, he steadily climbed the division standings, moving from outside the top 3 in the early miles to the division lead by mile 49, a position he held for the remainder of the race. For future extreme-heat ultras, Martinez could look at building more controlled pacing surges earlier to preserve energy for the back half, where his splits stretched past 25-29 minutes per mile in the final third.
