Blistering Early Pace Gives Way to a Grinding Second Half Dakota Watson opened the Habanero Hundred 100K with real speed, clicking off the first five miles at a 10:15 min/mile pace and sitting atop the M30-39 division through six miles of racing. That early move came under a start designed to be brutal by intent the Habanero Hundred fires its gun at high noon so runners absorb the worst of the Texas heat while still fresh, rather than late in the race. Watson's opening pace reflected that fresh-legs approach before the sun and mileage began to take their toll. From there, the pace steadily lengthened as the race wore on, moving from the 10-11 minute range early to the mid-teens by mile 20, and eventually into the high-teens and 20s per mile through the middle and late stages, with several laps stretching past 25-30 minutes as fatigue and heat accumulated. Despite the slowdown, Watson continued grinding through 61.19 total miles, finishing in 19:02:44 for 21st overall out of 75 finishers, 13th among men, and 8th in the competitive M30-39 division. The results show a runner capable of real early speed but who could benefit from a more conservative opening effort given the extreme demands of this course average real-feel temperatures over 100 degrees, high humidity, and deep sand throughout. A more measured start, banking less time in the first six miles, may help preserve pace deeper into the back half and convert a strong opening into a stronger overall placement on a day when the heat, not the competition, was the primary opponent.
