Division Champion Surges Late Despite Heat-Driven Fade Dominik Voss, 24, of Port Bolivar, capped the 2026 Habanero Hundred 50K in 6:25:29, good for 6th overall and 5th among men in a field of 71 finishers. Racing on a course built entirely from a single 10km loop through deep Texas sand with real-feel temperatures pushing past 100 degrees, Voss claimed the top spot in the M20-29 division a position he seized for good at mile 19 and held through the finish. Voss opened conservatively, clicking off his first five miles at an even 11:00 pace and sitting 2nd in his age group through mile 18. From there, he found another gear relative to his competition, moving from 2nd to 1st in the M20-29 field between miles 18 and 19 and never relinquishing it over the final 12 miles. His overall placement also climbed steadily in the race's first half, improving from 17th at mile one to as high as 6th by mile 17, a jump of eleven positions that reflects strong, patient early pacing. The back half told a different story as conditions took their toll: split paces stretched from the 10:3012:00 range into the 13:0020:00 range between miles 19 and 30, including a 20:05 split at mile 26. This late slowdown is consistent with the event's notoriously punishing heat, which organizers intentionally front-load by starting the race at high noon. For a coach's take, the pacing shows real strength in the opening two-thirds; sharpening heat management and effort control in the final 10K could help Voss convert that early positional surge into an even stronger closing kick in future outings on this course.
