Date: Aug. 22, 2026 Participant: Jakob Culver #375 Race: 2026 Habanero Marathon Distance: 26.2 miles

Resilient Pacing Delivers Steady Marathon Finish in Texas Heat Jakob Culver, 32, of Spring, TX, completed the marathon distance at the 2026 Habanero Hundred in 8:38:13, covering 25.9 miles at an average pace of 20:00 min/mile, placing 14th overall out of 39 participants and 5th in the M30-39 division. The Habanero Hundred is built entirely on a single 10km loop at the 7IL Ranch, with the marathon distance stitched together from four laps plus a short bolt-on section all run under conditions organizers describe as producing average real-feel temperatures above 100 degrees with deep sand underfoot. Culver went out sharp, opening with a 14:24 first mile and holding 13th-14th overall through the first seven miles, with splits mostly in the 14-17 min/mile range. The middle portion of the race brought a natural fade, with per-mile splits stretching to 25-34 min/mile between miles 11 and 15 as cumulative pace slipped past 19:00 min/mile. A standout surge arrived late: miles 22-23 tightened back to 20-21 min/mile splits, briefly lifting Culver to 8th overall and 2nd in his division before settling into the closing two laps and finishing 14th. The overall arc strong opening positioning, a mid-race dip, and a late-race rally suggests real strength in both pacing discipline and mental toughness through the heaviest heat window. Sharpening the effort through miles 8-15, where the biggest time was lost, could help preserve more of that early positioning all the way to the finish and produce an even stronger overall result on this challenging course.
