Front-Runner Fades Late But Holds On for the Win Tyler Snyder claimed the overall marathon title at the 2026 Habanero Hundred, crossing the line in 4:14:41 across 25.9 miles, topping a field of 39 finishers. True to the race's reputation as one of Texas' most brutal trail events starting at high noon with real-feel temperatures pushing past 100 degrees Snyder's race was a study in early speed followed by a hard-fought battle against the heat. Snyder opened with a blistering first mile of 9:06 and quickly found his rhythm, clicking off splits in the 8:178:43 range through mile four. He held the overall lead for nearly the entire race, briefly slipping to second place at mile 10 (10:41 elapsed, 9:14 split) before reclaiming the top spot by mile 11 and never relinquishing it again. His fastest split of the day, an 8:06 mile, came at mile 13 the race's midpoint showing a strong surge right as fatigue typically begins to set in for competitors. The back half of the race told a different story, with splits steadily climbing into the 10- and 11-minute range, including a 13:36 mile 20 split, reflecting the toll of sustained heat exposure on a deliberately punishing course. Despite the slowdown, Snyder's cushion built over the first half proved decisive, and his elapsed pace settled at 9:50 min/mile for the full distance. For future efforts on courses like this one, a more even pacing strategy in the middle miles rather than the early 8-minute surge could help preserve leg speed and reduce the late-race fade, particularly given how quickly conditions on this course can escalate.
