Date: Aug. 22, 2026 Participant: Tristan Wigg #358 Race: 2026 Habanero Marathon Distance: 26.2 miles
Early Race Lead Gives Way to Steady Runner-Up Finish Tristan Wigg completed the Marathon distance at the 2026 Habanero Hundred in 4:45:15 over 25.9 miles (11:00 min/mile pace), finishing 2nd overall out of 39 participants and 2nd in the men's field. Wigg came out sharp, opening with a 9:07 first mile and settling into a strong rhythm between 8:10 and 9:15 per mile through the first nine miles while sitting in 2nd overall. At mile 10, he briefly grabbed the overall race lead with a 9:11 split his fastest sustained overall placement of the day before being passed back into 2nd, a position he held for the remaining 16 miles. The second half told a different story, with pace steadily drifting from the low-9-minute range into the 11-to-14-minute range, including splits of 14:41 at mile 14 and 14:50 at mile 20. That kind of late fade is common at the Habanero Hundred, billed as Texas' hottest trail race and deliberately started at high noon so runners absorb the heat while fresh rather than at the end a course where real-feel temperatures regularly climb past 100 degrees. Given that context, Wigg's ability to hold 2nd overall despite the slowdown speaks to solid overall fitness. Building more resilience in the back half of hot, long efforts whether through heat-specific training blocks or slightly more conservative early pacing could help him sustain his early speed deeper into future races on this demanding course.
