Date: Aug. 22, 2026 Participant: Jofrank Sierra #378 Race: 2026 Habanero Marathon Distance: 26.2 miles

Fast Start Fades Under Texas Heat Jofrank Sierra completed the marathon distance at the 2026 Habanero Hundred in 6:41:40, placing 10th overall out of 39 participants and 2nd in the Men's 20-29 division. Notably, the race begins with an intentional high-noon start, exposing runners to peak heat exposure while still fresh rather than in the fatigue of a race's closing hoursa defining and deliberate quirk of this Texas ultra event. Sierra opened strong, holding 1st place in his age division through mile 7 with a blistering 6:51 split at mile 2 and an elapsed pace under 10 minutes per mile through the first two miles. By mile 8, he settled into 2nd in his division, a position he maintained the rest of the race. From there, his per-mile splits climbed steadilyrunning in the 12-13 minute range through mile 13, then progressively slowing into the 17-20 minute range by mile 20, before closing with a 21:52 split at mile 23. This pattern reflects the demanding conditions described by race organizers, who note average real-feel temperatures exceeding 100 degrees with high humidity and deep sand underfoot. Given the nearly 14-minute-per-mile swing between his fastest and slowest splits, Sierra's results suggest an aggressive early effort that outpaced his ability to sustain pace deep into the heat. A more conservative opening strategybanking less speed early to preserve output over the final third of the racecould help smooth out this fade in future hot-weather ultras. His consistent division standing throughout the back half, despite the slowdown, shows resilience worth building on as he refines pacing for extreme-condition races.
