Steady Climb to a Podium Finish Michael Lafferty placed 3rd overall out of 110 participants and 3rd in his gender division at the 2026 Habanero Hundred Half Marathon, crossing the 13.2-mile course in 2:30:15 for an overall pace of 11:23 per mile. He opened in 8th place after the first mile (10:10 pace) but climbed into the top four by mile two and held a position between 3rd and 5th overall for the remainder of the race, ultimately sealing 3rd place on the final stretch. Lafferty's mile splits show a course that rewarded patience: his fastest mile came at mile six (9:23), while his slowest efforts arrived at miles seven, eight, and thirteen (13:29, 13:13, and 14:13, respectively). This pattern suggests some hard-fought terrain or brief stoppages later in the race, followed by strong recovery, as he was able to close with a competitive final push to secure the podium spot. Notably, he spent much of the middle miles as the top finisher in his Masters division before finishing 3rd in the Men's Overall category. Held on the 7IL Ranch's single 10km loop system, the Habanero Hundred is known as one of Texas' most brutal trail races, with a deliberate high-noon start designed to expose runners to peak heat while they're still fresh rather than late in the race. Given the demanding conditions, Lafferty's disciplined pacing through the first ten miles was a strength. Tightening the variance in his mid-to-late race splits particularly avoiding the multi-minute swings seen at miles 7, 8, and 13 could help him bank an even faster finishing kick in future events on similarly challenging terrain.
