Date: Aug. 22, 2026 Participant: Avanna OBrien #574 Race: 2026 Habanero 10K Distance: 6.2 miles

Female Field Topped After Steady Climb Through the Pack Avanna O'Brien, 40, of Humble, TX, won the women's 10K at the 2026 Habanero Hundred, crossing in 1:25:55 (14:05/mile pace) to finish 7th overall out of 49 competitors and 1st in both the female and 40+ division fields. O'Brien's race was a study in progressive positioning. She opened in 7th overall through the first mile (13:58) and sat 3rd among women through mile two, even as her pace held remarkably steady in the 13:3714:11/mile range across the first four splits. The turning point came at mile five, where a 12:06 split her fastest of the day vaulted her into 1st place among women, a position she defended through the finish despite a slower 16:01 closing mile, likely reflecting the course's demanding terrain. Her overall placement also improved late, moving from 9th back up to 7th by the finish. The result came on a course built entirely from a single 10km loop at the 7IL Ranch, a 1,150-acre working property that has stayed in the same family for more than five generations. While the 10K starts and finishes at the ranch rather than the event's signature high-noon Bellville start, runners still face the race's trademark deep sand and Texas August heat. Given the fade in her final split, O'Brien may benefit from adjusting her mid-race effort to better preserve closing speed a small tweak that could sharpen an already strong performance on a genuinely tough course.
