Steady Climb from the Back of the Pack to a Division Win Collin Morrison capped the 10K at the 2026 Habanero Hundred in 1:25:23, good for 6th overall out of 49 finishers, 6th among men, and a 1st-place finish in the M40-49/Masters division. The result came on a course true to its name the Habanero Hundred is famous for its intentionally brutal high-noon start, designed so runners face Texas' worst heat while still fresh rather than late in the race. The splits tell a story of a slow start followed by a sharp surge. Morrison opened with an 18:30 first mile, good for only 24th overall at that point. From there, he turned things around dramatically, running a 9:43 second mile that vaulted him to 7th overall and 2nd in his Masters division. He continued climbing through mile three, reaching 5th overall with a 12:02 split, and held a top-6 position across the remaining miles despite a slower 16:44 final split, ultimately crossing the line in 6th overall and claiming the Masters title. The pacing pattern a cautious opening mile followed by a strong middle stretch and a natural fade late suggests solid endurance and smart positioning once he found his rhythm. Given how much ground was made up between miles one and two, a more even effort from the gun could allow him to bank those early positions rather than chase them down. The last mile's dip in pace, understandable given the heat this race is known for, is another area to target with an eye toward maintaining pace deeper into future races. Overall, a well-earned Masters win built on a strong mid-race recovery.
