Consistent Pacing Delivers a Strong 50K Finish in Brutal Heat Pedro Rodriguez, 43, of Houston, completed the 50K distance at the 2026 Habanero Hundred in 5:29:23, covering 30.69 miles at an overall pace of 10:43 per mile. The race, held on a single 10km loop at the 7IL Ranch, is designed so runners are never more than three miles from an aid station a notable structural feature given the event's reputation for extreme August heat and deep sand underfoot. Rodriguez's early splits showed an aggressive opening rhythm before settling into a sustainable rhythm for the bulk of the race. From mile 10 onward, his per-mile splits ranged mostly between 11:30 and 15:47, with a standout fast split of 11:32 at mile 27 impressive given it came deep into the race. His toughest stretch came at mile 19, where conditions or terrain pushed his split to 19:02, the slowest of the day, before he rebounded with a 12:48 the very next mile. This kind of recovery after a rough patch speaks well to his mental resilience on a demanding course. Looking ahead, Rodriguez could benefit from a more even pacing strategy through the middle miles, as the gradual climb in split times between miles 20 and 26 (peaking near 17:22) suggests some fatigue accumulation that a slightly more conservative early effort might help offset. Given the course's difficulty deep sand, high humidity, and real-feel temperatures exceeding 100 degrees his ability to finish with several sub-12-minute miles in the race's final third is a strong sign of endurance and composure under pressure. With more targeted pacing work, particularly in the back half, there's real potential for an even stronger performance on this demanding terrain.
