Early Speed Gives Way to a Hard-Fought Century Finish Thierry Joffrain, 50, of Austin, completed the 2026 Habanero Hundred's 100-mile distance in 22:52:46, an average pace of 14:02 per mile, placing 3rd in his gender division among 79 total participants. This result came on a course run in the notoriously brutal Texas August heat, where between 2015 and 2025 only 198 total 100-mile finishes have ever been recorded underscoring how demanding this event's cupless, high-noon-start format truly is. Joffrain's race began at an aggressive clip, clicking off the first five miles at an 8:298:30 min/mile pace while sitting in 2nd overall. He held a top-3 overall position deep into the race, briefly surging into the outright overall lead near mile 40 and again at mile 45, and took the Masters division lead from miles 49 through 54. A particularly strong overall-lead stretch resurfaced late, at miles 8586, showing he had more than one gear left even after 17 hours of racing. The back half told a different story than the front: pace steadily climbed from the sub-9:00 miles early on to the 15:0020:00+ min/mile range by miles 6592, with a few outlier splits above 27 minutes (miles 6870) suggesting extended aid-station stops or rough patches. Given the pronounced gap between his early and late pacing, Joffrain could look at strategies to better distribute effort across the full 100 miles particularly through the mid-race stretch (miles 4070) where the pace decay was steepest. Considering the extreme conditions this course is built for, sustaining a more even effort in that window could help preserve overall placement in future editions.
