Early Speed Battles Midrace Heat Before Closing Strong Pedro Cisneros, 41, of San Antonio, completed the Half Marathon at the 2026 Habanero Hundred in 2:56:40, an average pace of 13:23 min/mile. He finished 13th overall out of 110 participants, 9th among men, and 2nd in the M40-49 division a fitting result at an event billed as Texas' hottest trail race, run on a course where organizers warn of real-feel temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. His splits tell a story of an aggressive start followed by a tough middle stretch. Cisneros opened with an 11:02 first mile and held sub-11:00 pace through mile 3, briefly climbing to 5th in his division and 6th overall. The heat appears to have taken its toll from miles 7 through 10, where splits ballooned to 16:51, 17:07, 14:13, and 17:03 a stretch that cost him significant ground relative to the field. He answered with a strong rebound on mile 12, clocking an 11:19 split, his fastest since the opening miles, before finishing out the course. The pacing arc here fast start, significant midrace fade, strong late kick suggests the early pace may have been harder to sustain once the course's midday heat set in. Given how well he closed, particularly that sub-11:30 mile late in the race, a more measured effort through the first 5K could help preserve legs for the tougher middle miles, where the biggest time was lost. With the finishing speed already evident, dialing in even pacing across the full 13.2 miles could translate directly into a stronger overall placement in future starts at this notoriously demanding event.
