Date: Aug. 22, 2026 Participant: Christopher Richards #509 Race: 2026 Habanero Half Marathon Distance: 13.1 miles

Fast Start Yields Runner-Up Finish Despite Late-Race Fade Christopher Richards, 36, of Richmond, TX, completed the Half Marathon at the 2026 Habanero Hundred in 3:09:59, covering the event's 13.2-mile distance slightly longer than a standard half due to the race's signature bolt-on start segment. He finished 18th overall out of 110 participants, 13th among male finishers, and 2nd in the competitive M30-39 division. Richards opened strong, clocking an 11:35 pace on his first mile and holding a sub-13:00 pace through mile six, where he posted his fastest split of the day at 10:33 min/mile good enough to briefly claim the overall division lead. He held that top divisional spot through mile ten before conditions caught up with him. From there, his splits steadily lengthened, culminating in a 19:18 min/mile final mile, nearly double his opening pace, as he settled into 2nd place in his division at the finish. The pacing pattern a strong early rhythm, a mid-race surge, and a late fade suggests Richards has the speed to compete near the front but could benefit from more even pacing strategy to preserve his lead in the closing miles. Given the Habanero Hundred's reputation as one of Texas's most brutal trail events run in August heat with real-feel temperatures regularly exceeding 100 degrees and deep sand underfoot holding a top divisional position through mile ten was a notable accomplishment. With better management of effort in the race's second half, Richards has a clear path to closing out future races with the same strength he shows at the start.
