Division Title Capped by a Hard-Fought Final Mile Racing in Bastrop, Texas native Brian Thomas topped the M50-59 division at the 2026 Habanero Hundred's 10K, finishing 20th overall out of 49 participants and 11th among all male finishers with a time of 1:45:29. Thomas held the division lead for four of the six miles, only briefly ceding the top spot in miles two and three before reclaiming and holding it through the finish. His mile splits tell the story of a demanding day on the trail: an opening mile of 15:53 set an early pace, followed by a middle stretch that saw times climb to 18:20 and 17:50 as the course extracted its toll. A strong rebound in mile five (15:01) suggested a well-timed surge, before the closing mile ballooned to 20:45 nearly five minutes slower than his fastest split. That final-mile fade is worth flagging for future training blocks; building in more race-pace-specific endurance work could help smooth out that late deceleration and protect placement in a tightening field. Context matters here: the Habanero Hundred is run on a cupless course with mandatory personal hydration and is billed as Texas' hottest trail race, with real-feel temperatures regularly exceeding 100 degrees. Against that backdrop, Thomas's ability to secure and defend a division win despite the late slowdown reflects solid pacing discipline for most of the race. With a bit more attention to finishing strength, particularly in the closing mile, there's a clear path to an even more commanding performance at this distance next time out.
