Date: Aug. 22, 2026 Participant: Easier said than run #640 Race: 2026 Habanero 100 Mile Relay Distance: 100.0 miles
Early Speed Bursts Carry Team to a Division Victory Running as a 100-Mile Relay entry at the 2026 Habanero Hundred, this team covered 97.79 miles in 18:36:33 (11:25/mile average), finishing 5th overall out of 25 teams and taking 1st in both the Mixed gender and division categories. The result came on a course run in Texas August heat exceeding 100 degrees real-feel, on a race that is cupless and requires runners to carry a minimum of 500ml of personal hydration at all times. The opening laps were the standout stretch: the first five miles were covered in 8:528:53/mile splits, holding 2nd overall through the opening 44 minutes. That pace naturally settled as the race lengthened by mile 40 the team's split pace had eased to 9:52/mile and elapsed pace to 11:29/mile, a normal and expected adjustment across a race that unfolds over repeated 10km loops. Positioning stayed strong throughout, holding 1st in the division category for the bulk of the event, briefly slipping to 2nd between roughly miles 46 and 91 before reclaiming the division lead for good at mile 92. The closing miles showed good composure, tightening back into the 10:2512:11/mile range from mile 92 to the finish at mile 97, enough to secure the final push back to 1st in gender and division standings. For future relay efforts, a slightly more measured opening five miles could help preserve some of that early speed for the mid-race stretch where the pace gap widened most (miles 4065), potentially tightening the margin in the overall standings even further.
