Late Surge Fuels Podium-Caliber Finish After Midrace Rough Patch Racing as a 100-Mile Relay team at the 2026 Habanero Hundred Texas' notoriously brutal High Noon-start ultra on a 10km loop at the 7IL Ranch this squad covered 97.79 miles in 20:27:01, an overall pace of 12:32/mile, finishing 10th overall and 4th in the gender category among 25 teams. The result came on a course where average real-feel temperatures exceed 100 degrees and runners are never more than three miles from aid, with exchanges permitted only in the start/finish transition zone and just one runner on course at a time. The opening six legs were remarkably steady, locking in identical 13:0713:08/mile splits and holding 16th overall. A rough stretch followed between miles 9 and 12, where splits ballooned to 15:53, 17:40, 19:00 and 20:12/mile, dropping the team to a race-worst 21st overall. The response was immediate and sustained: legs 2024 produced four sub-9:30 splits (8:43, 8:18, 9:27, 9:03), climbing back to 12th overall and briefly cracking the top 3 (3rd overall, 2nd gender) by mile 34. From there, the team settled into a disciplined 12:1012:25/mile rhythm for the bulk of the second half, holding steady around 9th10th overall through the 60s, 70s and 80s. A closing kick in the final legs including a strong mile 97 split that pushed the team back to 3rd overall and 2nd in gender capped a race defined by resilience after adversity. Tightening pacing consistency during the mid-race dip could shave meaningful time off the overall result in future efforts on this notoriously punishing course.
