Podium Relay Effort Built on an Early Sub-9 Surge Running as the mixed team Los Tierruos out of Houston, the trio covered the full 100K distance (61.19 miles) at the 2026 Habanero Hundred in 10:53:35, an average pace of 10:40 per mile, good for 3rd overall and 2nd in the Mixed division among 15 relay teams. The result came on a course built entirely from a 10km loop through the 7IL Ranch, run in conditions the race is famous for real-feel temperatures pushing past 100 degrees and deep Texas sand underfoot. The team's opening exchanges were its strongest, holding an 8:538:54 min/mile pace through the first six miles and sitting in 3rd overall from the gun. That rhythm loosened over the middle miles, with per-mile splits drifting into the 1114 minute range by miles 1628, including a season-slow 14:33 split at mile 28. Still, the team surged back into 1st place in the Mixed division on three separate occasions around miles 2225 and again at mile 39 showing repeated ability to reset pace after fading. A late push from miles 5054 produced some of the day's fastest splits, dipping to 8:40 and 8:51 per mile, before settling into the 9:3013:10 range through the finish. The overall arc fast start, extended midrace fade, brief resurgences, and a strong closing kick suggests the team has both the leg speed and the depth to contend for the overall podium outright. Tightening pacing consistency between exchanges, particularly avoiding the mile-28-style spikes above 13 minutes, would help convert those temporary 1st-place positions into a sustained lead. Notably, at a race where only 198 total 100-mile finishes have been recorded in its first decade, and where finishers are cupless and self-sufficient with hydration by rule, simply completing the full 100K distance as a team places Los Tierruos in select company.
