Steady Pacing Gives Way to a Powerful Late-Race Surge Geronimo Gonzalez, 50, of Katy, TX, completed the 2026 Habanero Hundred 50K in 7:18:22, finishing 9th overall out of 71 finishers, 8th among men, and 2nd in the Masters division. That result came on a course built from a single 10km loop repeated five times, ensuring runners were never more than three miles from aid a notable design feature given the event's reputation for extreme August heat in Texas. Gonzalez opened efficiently, covering the first five miles in a consistent 11:4011:41 min/mile pace. The middle portion of the race showed the toll of heat and terrain, with splits stretching to 21:52 min/mile across miles 1418 and a peak of 25:44 min/mile at mile 13 a stretch that dropped him to 35th overall at one point. However, Gonzalez rallied significantly in the race's second half, posting a strong stretch of 8:23 min/mile splits from miles 2024, propelling him from 35th to 9th overall and into the top 10 for the remainder of the race. This late surge nearly matching his opening pace after enduring the day's toughest miles reflects strong endurance management under difficult conditions. For future races, targeting more consistency through the middle miles, particularly around the 1318 mile stretch where pace nearly doubled, could help preserve energy for an even stronger overall time. The finishing kick demonstrated here is a strong foundation to build pacing strategy around.
