Age-Group Win Forged Through Rising Heat and Fading Pace Arnie Chaiyavet, 56, of Houston, claimed the top spot in the M50-59 division at the 2026 Habanero Hundred half marathon, finishing in 3:18:34 (15:02 min/mile pace) and placing 20th overall out of 110 finishers and 15th among all male competitors. This result is notable given the race's reputation as one of the toughest heat-endurance tests in Texas trail running, run on deep sand under a high-noon start specifically designed to expose runners to peak temperatures while still fresh. The mile-by-mile data tells a clear story of a strong start followed by a heat-driven fade and a hard-fought climb back through the age-group ranks. Arnie opened with three consistent miles in the 12:5413:06 range, good enough for 6th7th in his division early on. Splits lengthened noticeably from mile 4 onward, peaking with a 22:07 split at mile 8 likely reflecting an aid-station stop or the course's brutal midday conditions.
