Steady Masters Effort Fades Late as Texas Heat Takes Its Toll Michael Baird, 55, of Abilene, completed the 10K at the 2026 Habanero Hundred in 1:40:43, an average pace of 16:30 per mile, placing 17th overall and 9th among men out of 49 total participants. He also finished 3rd in the Men's Masters division, a solid showing on a course that lived up to its reputation the Habanero Hundred is intentionally started at high noon so runners face the day's peak heat while still fresh rather than late in the race. Baird's mile splits tell the story of that heat exposure. He opened strong, covering the first mile in 15:07 and briefly holding 1st in his 50-59 age group through mile two (15:00 split). From there, his pace gradually slowed 17:22 for mile three, 16:39 for mile four, and 15:38 for mile five before a final 19:28 split closed out the race. That final mile, nearly four and a half minutes slower than his fastest, reflects the compounding effect of Texas' notorious late-summer heat and deep sand terrain that define this event. For future efforts on similarly demanding courses, Baird could benefit from a slightly more conservative opening pace to preserve energy for the back half, as his early-race speed (sub-15:10 per mile) was difficult to sustain once temperatures and terrain fatigue set in. Building targeted heat-adaptation training and practicing even-effort pacing over degrading terrain could help him hold position through the final miles rather than surrendering ground late, as seen in his drop from 12th to 17th overall between miles four and six. Overall, a strong Masters-division performance on one of Texas' toughest summer courses.
