Steady Masters Pace Through Punishing Conditions Mike Peterson claimed the Men's Masters title at the 2026 Habanero Hundred 50K, crossing the line in 6:58:39 (13:38/mile average) to finish 8th overall and 7th among men out of 71 total participants. Peterson held the top Masters spot for the vast majority of the race, briefly ceding it for a stretch between miles 13-18 before reclaiming and holding it through the finish. Peterson's early pacing was notably sharp, clicking off the first five miles at a consistent 10:17-10:18/mile split, good for 9th overall. Conditions caught up by mile 7, where a 15:36 split marked the first significant slowdown, and elapsed pace steadily climbed into the 13:00-14:00/mile range for the middle third of the race. A standout moment came at mile 27, where a 10:55 split vaulted Peterson to 3rd overall before settling back into the top-10 for the final miles, closing with splits of 16:07, 12:03, and 11:13. One notable feature of the Habanero Hundred is its deliberately brutal noon start under a 30-hour clock, designed so runners face the heat while still fresh rather than late in the race a detail that helps explain the pace variability seen in Peterson's back-half splits, as real-feel temperatures above 100 degrees and deep sand took their toll.
