Date: Aug. 22, 2026 Participant: Tamatha M DiNoto #587 Race: 2026 Habanero 10K Distance: 6.2 miles
Early Speed Gives Way to a Hard-Fought Finish Tamatha DiNoto took on the 10K distance at this year's Habanero Hundred, an event built around a punishing high-noon start and triple-digit real-feel temperatures at the 7IL Ranch. DiNoto opened fast, clocking a 14:00 first mile and sitting 11th overall early on, a pace strong enough to lead the F40-49 division through the first three miles of the race. As the Texas heat took hold, her per-mile splits steadily lengthened climbing from 19:18 in mile three to 28:04 by mile six a pattern consistent with the extreme conditions the race is known for. Notably, race organizers report that most medical incidents at Habanero come not from the ultra-distance field, but from shorter-distance runners who go out too hot, a dynamic echoed in DiNoto's own quick start and later fade. She crossed the line in 1:57:42, finishing 22nd overall out of 49 participants, 11th among women, and 2nd in the F40-49 division. Given how her pace evolved over the six miles, a slightly more measured opening could help preserve energy for the closing stretch in future hot-weather efforts. Still, holding onto a runner-up division finish despite the late slowdown reflects solid fitness and composure under tough conditions. With a bit more pacing discipline early on, DiNoto is well positioned to finish even stronger next time out.
