Fast Start Fades Into a Hard-Earned Age-Group Title Javian Quinones completed the 100K distance at the 2026 Habanero Hundred in 15:31:08 over the event's signature 10km loop course, finishing 10th overall out of 75 participants, 5th among men, and 1st in the M30-39 division. The race, held on a working Texas ranch known for its high-noon start and triple-digit real-feel temperatures, tested pacing discipline across ten laps of deep sand and heat. Quinones' splits tell a story of an aggressive opening followed by a long, steady grind. His first six miles clicked off at an identical 4:14 min/mile pace good enough for the overall race lead through that stretch before a sharp correction into the mid-to-high teens per mile as the loops accumulated. He held the overall lead as late as mile 13 and remained in podium contention (2nd3rd overall) through roughly the marathon mark, a testament to the strength built into that early effort even as the pace normalized. From there, splits settled into the 1421 minute/mile range for the remaining 35+ miles, with overall position gradually settling between 7th and 10th as fresher runners closed the gap over the back half. This pattern a fast opening relative to the eventual sustainable pace is common in ultra racing but worth flagging: a more even early pacing strategy, particularly on a course where aid is never more than three miles away, could preserve additional finishing speed in the final loops. Even so, the steady final push was enough to secure the M30-39 age-group title, a strong result on a course that has produced fewer than 200 total 100-mile finishers in its history.
