A Steady Ten-Minute Rhythm All the Way to Marina Green Under grey marine light, with the threatened rain and wind never arriving, Matthew Hines turned nearly perfect running weather into 4:28:31 for the 26.2 miles an average of 10:14 per mile, among 7,174 marathon finishers on Long Beach's flat coastal course. The metronome was the story. After a 10:33 opening mile, almost every split that followed landed between 10:04 and 10:31, mile after mile along Shoreline Drive, past the Queen Mary and out through Belmont Shore. The best came last: roughly 10:08 and 10:04 at miles 21 and 22, then about 9:59 and 9:57 for miles 25 and 26, with the final two tenths at an 8:56 pace. Twenty-six miles of salt air, and he still had a closing kick left for Marina Green. The Santy's Gym singlet wore it well.
