His pacing improved across the race: 5:20, 5:29, 5:17, 5:12, then a fastest final kilometre of 4:37/km. That closing kilometre was 43 seconds quicker than his opening kilometre. He moved up steadily through the field, improving from 53rd to 41st in his division over the 5K. The key stat is the negative trend in pace after 2km, with each of the last three kilometres faster than the one before. As a coachs note, the strongest opportunity is to smooth out the second kilometre; matching the control he showed from 3km onward could bring his overall time down further.
