His race built well: 5:19, 5:19, 5:17, 5:09, then 5:00 for his closing kilometre. That is a 19-second improvement from first to last kilometre, with each of the final three kilometres faster than the one before. He also moved up steadily through 3 km, improving from 62nd to 53rd in his age group before finishing 55th. The standout stat is the finish: his last 2 km averaged about 5:05/km, notably quicker than his first 2 km at 5:19/km. On a fast evening 5K through Canary Wharf, this was a well-controlled effort; a slightly quicker opening kilometre could help convert that strong finish into a faster overall time next time.
