Fast Opening Kilometre Set Up a Solid 5K Jack ran 5.00 km in 27:46, averaging 5:33/km. His quickest section came early with a 4:54 first kilometre, then he settled into 5:35, 5:50, 5:48 and 5:41/km. That gave him a 56-second spread between fastest and slowest kilometres, with a small lift in the final kilometre after the mid-race slowdown. He finished 102nd in the male 4145 category and inside the top 35% overall (1942 of 5624). The strong opening kilometre showed good speed, especially on a fast evening 5K through Canary Wharf. From a coaching perspective, the main opportunity is pacing: a slightly more controlled first kilometre could help hold the middle kilometres closer to the finish pace and produce a more even run.
