Quick Opening 2K Set Up a Solid 5K Sam covered 5.00km in 27:50, averaging 5:34/km. He finished 1,965th of 5,624, placing in the top 35% overall, and 173rd in the male 3640 division. His opening 2km was strong and controlled at 9:49 total, an average of 4:54/km, with 1km splits of 4:51 and 4:59. From 2km onward, pace moved to 5:58/km, 6:15/km, then 5:49/km, so the final 3km averaged about 6:01/km. That rebound in the last kilometre was a good sign after the slower fourth kilometre. For the next 5K, the clearest target is holding the first 2km effort a little deeper into the race. In an evening Canary Wharf event built for fast running through closed roads and city lights, that early speed gave him a solid platform.
