His opening kilometre was 4:45, followed by 4:51, then he steadily lifted the pace with 4:42, 4:38, and 4:38. That moved his average pace down from 4:48/km at 2 km to 4:42/km by the finish. He gained places well through the middle of the race, improving from 1,127th at 1 km to 924th at 4 km. The key strength here was the controlled finish; next time, a slightly sharper second kilometre could bring the overall time down further.
