Sub-15 5K with Strong Mid-Race Positioning Matthew Arnold ran 5.00 km in 14:58, averaging 2:59/km. He placed 12th overall out of 5,624, 11th in the Male Elite field, and 3rd in Male Elite 2630. His best position came at 2 km, where he had moved up to 8th overall and 2nd in his division. That early gain stands out in a large field. His kilometre splits were 3:00, 2:57, 2:59, 3:05, and 3:00, showing a fast opening 3 km in 8:55 before a slight slowdown in the fourth kilometre. Finishing the last kilometre back at 3:00/km was a good reset. As a coachs note, holding the 23 km rhythm a little deeper into the race may have put extra pressure on the athletes around him. Run The Wharfs closed-road evening format suited this kind of sharp, front-end performance.
