A patient start set up a brilliant downhill finish James ran an excellent St. George Half Marathon, finishing in 1:20:53 at 6:10 per mile and winning the boys 15-19 division. What stands out most is how well he built this race: after a 43:00 first half at 6:33 pace, he came home in 37:54 at 5:47 pace. That is a huge negative split, and each quarter got quicker, from 6:49 pace to 6:19, then 5:54, then 5:40. He kept moving up all morning, from 164th at mile 1 to 24th at the finish. The closing miles were especially strong, with 5:49, 5:41, 5:43, and 5:34 before a 5:20 final tenth. By mile 10 he had taken over the division lead, and he never gave it back. The opening mile in 7:27 was measured, but it clearly paid off once the road turned down into town and he was still running fast on tired legs.
