Fast, controlled marathon with a powerful second half That was a terrific St. George Marathon: 2:16:09 for 26.2 miles, averaging 5:11 per mile, and good for 2nd overall out of 5,987 runners. He settled in right away, moved into the lead by mile 4, and handled the early miles with real poise. When the course tilted up around Veyo, he stayed composed through miles 8 and 9 in 5:52 and 5:36, then got right back to work. What stands out most is how strong he was after halfway. He came through 13.1 in 1:09:24, then closed the second half in 1:06:45, a clear negative split. The third quarter was especially sharp at 32:32, or 4:58 pace, and miles 15, 16, 17, and 21 all dipped under 4:50 pace. Even late, he was still racing hard, holding 2nd to the line.
