Commanding half marathon win on a steady 4:59 pace Santiago Gaitan put together a terrific St. George Half Marathon, winning overall in 1:05:27 and averaging 4:59 per mile. He moved into the lead by mile 2 with a 4:51 split, followed it with a 4:48 third mile, and never gave it back. Just as impressive was how controlled the race looked early: his first quarter was 16:01, and the next two were 16:21 and 16:14. The middle miles told the story. After a 5:08 sixth mile and a 6:11 seventh, he settled right back in, reaching mile 9 at a 4:55 overall pace and keeping first all the way to town. The second half in 33:05 was only 43 seconds off his 32:22 opening half, which says plenty about his strength when the pace could easily have gotten away from him.
