Steady Progress and Strong Finish Karena Shum's performance in the 2026 Bay to Breakers 12K demonstrated consistent endurance and a commendable improvement throughout the race. Maintaining a progressive gain in pace from early splits, she advanced through the field. Starting with an 11:15 min/mile pace in the first mile, she improved her pace significantly by the last measured mile, finishing at a 9:22 min/mile pace. Karena's overall elapsed time was 1:19:39 with an average pace of 10:41 min/mile. Particularly notable was her advancement in the rankings mid-race, as she moved from 5308th place overall in the first two splits to 2814th by the sixth mile. This improvement was also reflected in her female and division placements. Continuing to refine the early miles with a controlled pace could enhance her subsequent splits even further.
