Austin maintained a steady effort despite encountering a steep ascent of Hayes Hill during the 2.2 to 2.7-mile stretch, resulting in a slower third mile split of 27:09. This hill contributed to a change in momentum, but Austin managed to stay consistent for the subsequent miles. Though there was a progressive increase in elapsed pace, peaking at 25:22 min/mile by the end, the splits from miles four to seven remained uniform at 28:57.
