Steady Improvement in Middle Splits Alex Zhang displayed consistent pacing and noticeable improvement during the middle segments of the 12K Centipede event at the 2026 Bay to Breakers. Starting with a 13:56 pace in the first mile, the pace shifted during the second mile, coinciding with Hayes Hill, resulting in a significant slowdown to a 24:03 split. Impressively, Alex regained momentum afterwards, completing miles four, five, and six at a consistent 14:44 pace each. Alex finished the overall race in 2:02:26, achieving a 16:26 min/mile pace. His results placed him 944th overall and 458th among male participants out of 1,839 total runners. A focal point for improvement could be the strategic handling of hilly terrain, given the evident time increase during the second mile.
