Steady Through Twenty, Tested Late Carlos Engels finished the marathon in 3:48:48, placing 228th overall and 187th among men in a field of 3,305 runners at Boulderthon. His race built on a strong, even foundation before the closing miles brought a noticeable shift in effort. Through the first 20 miles, Engels held a tight, consistent pace of 7:59 per mile, rarely drifting outside the high 7:40s to low 8:10s. That control gave way over the final six miles, where splits stretched from 9:45 up through the 11:00s and 12:03, the steepest stretch of the day. That fade began just before the lululemon Power-Up Zone near mile 22.5, marking the start of his toughest sustained miles on the course before the finish on the Pearl Street Mall.
