Steady Early Pace Gives Way to a Tough Final 10K Dan Van Valkenburg finished the marathon in 4:17:51, an overall pace of 9:50 per mile. He moved efficiently through the first two-thirds of the course, holding between 8:44 and 9:16 per mile through mile 18, then held near 9:44 pace through mile 19. From mile 20 on, the pace slid steadily, with splits between 10:26 and 13:58 over the closing six miles, before finishing on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder. His strongest full-mile stretch came early, from mile 1 through mile 15, where he never slipped slower than 9:06 per mile and touched 8:14 at mile 11. That control through the race's first half, run at Boulder's altitude of over 5,000 feet, set up the bulk of his overall time before the late-race pace decline took hold.
