Strong Start Fuels Steady Marathon Finish Matthew Hammel completed the marathon in 4:00:49, an average pace of 9:11 per mile. His first nine miles were the fastest stretch of the race, clicking off at roughly 8:19 per mile as he moved through the field. From there, his mile splits gradually eased, settling into the 9:0010:30 range through the back half, before closing with a 10:12 final mile into downtown Boulder. Racing at altitudeBoulder sits above 5,000 feetHammel's early pace held firm before the later miles slowed as fatigue set in. Miles 10 through 26 showed a steadier, more measured rhythm than the opening stretch, and maintaining more of that early pace deeper into the race could be a point of focus for future marathons. Overall, a well-paced opening effort that carried him to a solid finish on the Pearl Street Mall.
