Strong Early Pace Fades Late in the Marathon Matthew Ryan finished the marathon in 4:17:47, an average pace of 9:50 per mile. His fastest one-mile stretch came between miles 9 and 11, where he clicked off 8:49, 8:37, and 8:14 splits, pulling his cumulative pace down to 8:55 per mile by mile 12 his quickest point of the race. From there his overall pace held steady through the mid-teens before drifting upward over the final 10K, with splits lengthening past 10, then 12, then 13 minutes per mile between miles 19 and 23 as cumulative pace rose from 9:14 to 9:38. Ryan's race unfolded above 5,000 feet of elevation in Boulder, a factor worth noting given the marathon's net elevation gain. He closed out on the Pearl Street Mall, capping a race defined by a fast middle third and a tapering final stretch.
