Steady Early Pace Gives Way to a Tough Final Stretch Matt Anderson completed the marathon in 4:16:38, an average pace of 9:47 per mile. His race built on a strong, even first half: through 18 miles he held between 8:44 and 8:59 per mile, with an 8:46 average pace sustained from miles 11 through 17 the most consistent stretch of his day. Miles 19 through 24 saw a marked slowdown, with per-mile splits climbing into the 10- to nearly 14-minute range, before he rallied over the final two miles to close in 11:32 and 12:53. Boulder sits above 5,000 feet of elevation, a backdrop for any marathon effort in town. Anderson's race concluded with the marathon's traditional finish on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder, a fitting cap after his strong opening 18 miles set the tone for the day.
