Strong Early Rhythm Sets Up a Fast Closing Kick Emily Smith finished the marathon in 4:31:28. She settled into a steady rhythm early, holding between 9:45 and 9:55 per mile through mile 12 (elapsed time of 1:57:06), before easing through the mid-teens and twenties. That stretch slowed to 11:3511:42 per mile in the low 20s, but she rallied over the final three miles, dropping from 10:49 to 9:54 per mile to close with her fastest running since the opening miles. Smith's race ended on the historic Pearl Street Mall, the finish line for every distance in downtown Boulder, a city that sits above 5,000 feet of elevation a fitting cap to a marathon that tested pace management across changing terrain.
