Strong Start Fades to a Determined Finish Grey Sofia completed the marathon in 4:27:10, an average pace of 10:11 per mile. His race showed a clear two-part shape: the first 11 miles were remarkably even, holding between 8:52 and 9:07 per mile, before a steady decline set in from mile 12 onward as splits climbed into the 10- and 11-minute range, bottoming near 12:40 around mile 22. He found another gear in the closing miles, dropping back to an 11:05 pace for mile 26. That opening 11-mile stretch stands as the highlight of his day a disciplined, controlled effort that set up the rest of the race. Running at Boulder's altitude of over 5,000 feet adds its own demand to any marathon effort, and Sofia's early pacing reflected strong control before the course's later miles took their toll. Finishing on the Pearl Street Mall capped the effort in downtown Boulder.
